Meet The Founder - Katherine
Born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, Katherine’s love for marine life has been the driving force behind nearly every path she has taken. She studied at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and California State University, Monterey Bay.
While attending UH Mānoa, Katherine volunteered at Sea Life Park Hawaii with the Green Sea Turtle Program, helping maintain habitats, prepare diets, care for sea turtles, and support seasonal release efforts.
She also spent more than six years working as a lifeguard, earned her Water Safety Instructor certification, and taught Red Cross swim lessons.
In Fairbanks, Katherine created her own mermaid swim program, teaching students to swim with monofins and mermaid tails while also offering underwater mermaid photography.
Her lifelong goal was to work directly with marine animals. That goal ultimately brought her to Florida, where she worked at Discovery Cove and achieved a childhood dream of becoming a dolphin trainer.
After stepping away from traditional academics, Katherine focused on silicone fabrication and creating functional, ocean-inspired art. She founded Tiger Shark Mermaid, combining her experience in marine life, aquatic education, and mermaiding into handcrafted silicone mermaid gear.
From studying marine science to working with sea turtles and dolphins to building Tiger Shark Mermaid, her love for marine life has remained the common thread behind it all.
